Thongs don’t have to be the only footwear of choice during the warmer months. Think beyond the beach and think bush by strapping on your trekking boots to explore the best Perth hiking trails.

1. Bickley Reservoir, Bickley

Head to the Perth Hills to challenge yourself with embarking the Bickley Reservoir trail.

The trail is a 3.2 km return loop that offers impressive views of the Reservoir itself, granite outcrops, Sheoak and Wandoo forests and beyond.

The trail’s steep climbs and descents are complimented with its shaded areas along the walk, a welcomed respite for this 1 -3-hour workout in the sun.

2. Blue Wren Ramble Trail, Ellis Brook Valley, Gosnells

If you are looking to upgrade your stroll in the park, then set the GPS to locate Blue Wren Ramble Trail in the Ellis Brook Valley.

Not only is this valley home to over 500 wildflower species, but it is also home to four walk trails.

The Blue Wren Ramble Trail is easy-going 2.8 km return trail follows Ellis Brook, passing through Wandoo Woodland, a prime area for bird-watching.

3. Bold Park Bridle Trail, Floreat

Discover the untamed beauty of the largest remaining bushland in the Swan Coastal Plain. Slightly bigger than King’s Park, this park also is home to a variety of flora and fauna and offers a wilderness escape despite being located in an urban area.

The easy Bold Park Bridle Trail is a 7 km loop and roughly takes 1 – 3 hours to complete.

Trail start: Camel Lake Car Park, Perry Lakes Drive, Floreat 

4. Bush to Beach trail, Perth Western Suburbs

Combining the best of both of Perth’s worlds, the Bush to Beach trail is for those who want to reward themselves for an epic day of hiking through different landscapes with a splash at the end.

Forming the east and west link of the bigger Whadjuk Trail, this 16 km inner-city trail starts in Daglish and boasts impressive views of the coast and Perth skyline en route. 

Trail start: Rosalie Park, Onslow Road, Shenton Park

5. Lesmurdie Falls, Perth Hills

Chase waterfalls by heading to popular hiker trail hotspot, Lesmurdie Falls in Mundy Regional Park.

Located within the Darling Range escapement, this walk rewards your hard efforts on the trail with sublime views of the Swan Coastal Plain, Perth’s skyline and neighbouring suburbs.

There are several trails within the park to suit varying different degrees of fitness and difficulty levels however the walks generally take between 1 -3 hours.

6. Christmas Tree Creek Walk Trail, John Forrest National Park

Take your next-level sturdy hiking shoes to the Darling Ranges and explore the state’s oldest national park, John Forrest.

The Christmas Tree Creek Walk Trail transcends through various scenic landscapes including mixed jarrah-marri-wandoo forests, wandoo woodlands and with a glimpse of the Hovea Falls.

This 10.5 km loop trail also includes a challenging ascent and is popular with kangaroos so hike with caution!

7. Eskrine Nature Trail, Mandurah

Head south along this 6 km easy trail in the Peel inlet.

This Mandurah nature trail not only offers spectacular views of the Peel region but top-notch bird spotting opportunities among its bountiful flora and fauna.

8. Bushland Nature Trail, King’s Park

Easy, breezy and effortless. Starting at the Botanic Gardens, this nature trail takes you to see Western Australia’s native flora and fauna including jarrah, tuart, marri, banksias, to name a few.

The trail is less than 1 km and makes for a pleasant stroll in the city’s hidden wilderness.
