Cookie-cutter hotel rooms are so 2019. In 2020, it’s all about a stay with a story.

According to Airbnb, more and more people are hitting the search button looking for unique properties. In just the past year, searches for unexpected stays – windmills, converted shipping containers and treehouse – have risen by a whopping 70%. The more ‘grammable, the more in demand.

Just as well Airbnb already have plenty of homes listed that fit the bill when it comes to quirky stays.

There’s a whacky looking potato house in Idaho, a boot-shaped home in New Zealand, and even an out-of-this-world UFO stay in the UK – and they’re just the start of it! It seems that the world can’t get enough of these one-of-a-kind rooms and homes.

Think you can come up with a stay that would be even more sort after? Have an idea for accommodation you know people will be booking well in advance? Well, now is your time to get your ideas down on paper and into Airbnb, because they’re on the search for the world’s wildest home ideas – and are prepared to fund it too.

Airbnb announced today they are putting USD$1 million (AUD$1.5 million) towards financing the most unconventional and unusual liveable spaces around the world.

The Unique Airbnb Fund will be shared between 10 recipients, each chosen by an expert panel of design and style innovators – including Idaho’s potato home super-host, Kristie Wolfe. Submissions will be judged against criteria based on creativity, feasibility, sustainability and social good.

To be in with a chance for the prize, submit your proposals to airbnb.com/uniquefund. The Unique Airbnb Fund open until 1:59 pm AEST on April 16, 2020. The panel of judges will select the ten winners by May 15, 2020.
