Bring on Mardi Gras 2021.

The world has missed a good party, and that is why we are ecstatic to hear that Sydney’s ultimate human rainbow on earth fiesta, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade is back on in 2021.

Australia’s OG event celebrating pride and diversity has announced it’s kicking its heels and ruffling feathers on Saturday 6 March 2021. This event will be groundbreaking in many ways, not just because it is ever fabulous, but also being the first internationally significant event to take place since the outbreak of COVID-19.

Festivities will different in the post-COVID era with the parade to be held at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in a first to ensure the safety of parade participants, spectators and 23,000 audience members. Just think, the SCG could very well be the happiest place on earth with a massive concertation of dressed up (or not so clothed) partygoers channelling their inner Dancing Queen and having the time of their lives in the stands. What.A.Vibe.

Mardi Gras CEO Albert Kruger said of the parade’s new locale: “With a greater focus on community, our 2021 Parade will move away from large floats, centring instead on the outlandish pageantry of costumes, puppetry and props that make it such a phenomenon to witness.”

“Mardi Gras has always been the epitome of creative expression through art and culture; two things severely impacted by COVID-19 this year. So it was important to Mardi Gras that we rise to the occasion and to give the community the creative platform to express their pride to the world. The 2021 Parade may look different to how it has been in the past, but we feel very lucky to be able to give this opportunity to our communities during these times.”

Next years’ Mardi Gras theme is ‘Rise’, a poignant message during the challenge and hardship that 2020 has presented with the unwelcomed gifting of so many crises faced worldwide.

The optimistic theme encourages those to rise again through love, compassion, respect and understanding, and to work together to make the world a better place. And to help get the message across with glitter, feathers and dancefloor pizazz, even better.
