The Results Are In: You Can’t Get Enough Of These Rural Australian Towns

It’s all about rediscovering the smaller towns around Australia.

There’s never been a better time to get out and explore your own backyard. With international travel out, Australians are taking advantage of being a tourist in their state. There’s been a huge uptick in the number of locals travelling locally, and it’s not just the usual suspects, regional meccas Byron Bay and Margaret River, that are reaping the benefits.

According to Booking.com’s latest figures, the lesser-travelled rural Australian towns are finally getting a whole lot of love. Aussies have been thinking that bit further than their usual local getaways, and have been opting to rediscover their state through its road trip-able coastal towns and rustic nature escapes instead. Queensland’s inland town of Stanthorpe took out the top gong as Australia’s most booked rural town over winter, while Western Australia was the most represented with four northern coastal towns (Carnarvon, Kalbarri, Exmouth, and Geraldton) making it onto the list.

These rural gems have gained certainly gained some prominence over the past few months, but the top booked destinations show that Aussies still can’t get enough of their city breaks. SydneyGold CoastBrisbane and Perth were Australia’s top-performing destinations by number of bookings over the winter months.
