Street Food Sunday: Spice Up Your Life With This Spicy Thai Basil Chicken Recipe

Thailand cuisine is a one-stop flavour shop when it comes to delivering fireworks of punchy, zesty ingredients that blend so beautifully together that you almost demand at once, for another second round of flavour ka-pow.

Thailand’s much-loved spicy Thai basil chicken, locally known as Pad Krapao Gai, is a prime example. This popular stir-fry dish hits all the right notes when it comes to delivering a hearty meal with hints of chilli to give it some welcoming zing. This tasty dish is widely popular in street food markets and local restaurants and is best served with a bowl of rice

If you are looking for a winter warmer with some spice, try given your wok a work out with this quick Thai basil chicken recipe.

Spicy Thai Basil Chicken (Pad Krapao Gai) Recipe

Ingredients

400gr minced chicken thigh
1 tbl sp minced garlic
1 tbl sp ratio of 1:1: long red chilli and red birds eye chilli
20 gr holy basil (purple or green variety)
1 tsp sp fish sauce
half tsp castor sugar
1 tbl sp oyster sauce
2tbl sp sunflower oil
2 long red chillies sliced diagonally

Instructions

Heat a wok then put oil on high heat. Add garlic and chillies until slightly brown and fragrant.

Add chicken and stir until evenly cooked.

Add soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, oyster sauce and long red chillies and stir briefly until all ingredients are coated in the sauce.

Add the holy basil and immediately turn off the heat.

Serve on top of rice and add a fried egg sunny side up for a wholesome Thai feast!
